The seismic activity that has rocked
the Campi Flegrei area near Naples is continuing with 556 quakes
recorded since Saturday, as of 1 pm Tuesday, the National
Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has said.
Six earthquakes were of magnitude 3 or higher, INGV said.
In particular, two 3.9-magnitude quakes were recorded on Sunday
and Monday, according to the institute.
The most recent 3.1 magnitude quake was reported at 3:22 am on
Tuesday.
The Campi Flegrei area, also known as the Phlegrean Fields in
English, is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground
uplift, and there have been a series of earthquakes over the
last year.
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special
commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to take care of
risk-prevention measures.
The minister has complained about how urban development had been
allowed in the area.
