The traditional May Day concert in
Rome's historical leftwing rallying place Piazza San Giovanni
attracted one million people, organisers said Friday.
Police put the attendance at 300,000.
Performers including Tiromancino, Piero Pelù, Rocco Hunt
and Clementino mixed hits with Labour Day calls to fight Italy's
record unemployment and stop a spate of workplace deaths.
This year's event was rivalled by a smaller upstart concert
in the southern city of Taranto, which boasted headliners with
stronger street cred, Italian music watchers said.
Some 100,000 fans turned out in the Puglia port to applaud
a younger generation of protest singers like Bari rapper
Caparezza as well as veteran politically committed rockers such
as Vinicio Capossela, Fiorella Mannoia, Paula Turci, Diodato,
Filippo Graziani, Sud Sound System and Afterhours.
