(see previous) Centre-right politicians on Tuesday slammed the news of a new postponement in the case of two Italian marines facing possible trial for murder in India in connection with the shooting deaths of two Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy mission there in February 2012.
"Marines, another postponement in India" ENOUGH!!! Massimiliano Latorre must remain in Italy and Salvatore Girone repatriated immediately!" wrote Elio Vito of the opposition party Forza Italia (FI) and president of the House defence committee in a post to his Twitter feed.
Latorre is currently in Italy receiving medical treatment following a stroke and heart surgery but he is he scheduled to return to India in July.
"If it wasn't a tragedy it would be a farce," wrote party colleague Elvira Savino in reference to the long delays that have dogged the case, leading to friction between Rome and New Delhi.
"It is the latest humiliation for Italy which with the Renzi government enjoys no respect on the international stage," she continued.
"When will the government decide to intervene to put an end to this shameful situation that has lasted over three years? Are these the results of Premier Renzi's strategies? Enough of being humiliated!" echoed Edmondo Cirielli, of the right-wing opposition party Fratelli d'Italia-Alleanza Nazionale.
In February Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said the government was working "without fanfare" to resolve the case that remained "an open wound" for the country.
The Renzi government has said it is continuing to seek dialogue with the Indian authorities while also calling for international intervention in the case.
