Three more people were convicted
Thursday over a stampede among fans watching the 2017 Champions
League final between Juventus and Real Madrid in
Turin's central San Carlo square in which three people died and
at least 1,672 were injured.
Former Turin mayor Chiara Appendino was already found guilty in
the case and got a suspended sentence of 18 months, which she is
appealing.
On Thursday a Turin court sentenced police commander Michele
Mollo to two years in jail, suspended; another police chief,
Alberto Bonzano, to one year and four months, also suspended;
and senior police officer Marco Sgarbi to a suspended term of
one year and two months.
Six people were acquitted.
On January 27 last year Appendino and four other defendants all
got a suspended sentence of 18 months after a fast-track trial
for causing a disaster, bodily harm and manslaughter.
As well as Appendino, the others convicted were former Turin
city council cabinet chief Paolo Giordana; then city police
chief Angelo Sanna; architect Enrico Bertoletti; and the
ex-presidene of Turin's tourism agency, Maurizio Montagnese.
A sixth defendant, Danilo Bessone, a manager at the tourism
