The message of late Italian Communist
Party (PCI) leader Enrico Berlinguer is "still relevant" for
Italy, President Sergio Mattarella said on the 100th anniversary
of the fondly remembered political figure's birth at Sassari
University Wednesday.
Berlinguer, who died aged 62 in 1984, was a "protagonist of the
country's life who showed a profound respect for the
Constitution and its rules and a moral attention which was
constantly expressed and urged," said Mattarella referring to
the PCI's most popular leader's anti-graft campaigns.
"These are two indivisible aspects, and closely connected ones,
which represent an ever-current message for our Republic".
Berlinguer, a leading proponent of Eurocommunism, led the PCI,
Europe's biggest Communist party, from 1972 until his death and
took a strong stance against leftist terror and corruption in
public life.
