The centre-left Democratic Party
(PD)'s Alessio D'Amato is to run for Lazio governor in next
year's regional elections, the Lazio health councillor announced
Thursday.
D'Amato is looking to replace his party colleague and former PD
leader Nicola Zingaretti who has just stood down.
The elections are expected to take place in early February,
although no date has been set yet.
D'Amato said he would lead the same centre-left coalition that
won the last regional vote, but the PD is struggling to forge
new alliances and pundits say it lost the September 25 general
election because of this.
The health councillor also said he was willing to go through
primaries before being selected.
