Italian lay Catholic advocacy and
youth activist group Communion and Liberation (CL) on Saturday
voiced shock at the arrest of a 52-year-old CL-linked educator
on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl, saying he had already
been suspended and saying the association was suffering
"consternation".
In a statement, CL said "Communion and Liberation expresses
sorrow and dismay at what emerges from the ongoing investigation
by the judiciary against a person involved in the movement's
educational activity" .
The statement underlined that the educator "has already been
suspended".
The man, who worked for a youth group associated with CL, has
been charged with raping the girl at a camp at Rimini.
The case comes a day before CL opens its five day annual rally
at Rimini on Sunday, whose guests will include President Sergio
Mattarella and a host of the great and good.
