Three rightwing Italian League party
MEPS on Monday asked the European Commission to clarify whether
Ryanair's recent action in denying an Italian ALS sufferer a
place on a flight from Cagliari to Venice was in line with EU
law.
The Italian engineer, who is unable to breathe because of his
ALS, was refused permission to bring onto the flight an
artificial respirator.
The Irish budget airline said this was in line with their
policy, which differs from other airlines which would have
allowed the respirator in the cabin.
MEPS Marco Campomenosi, Paolo Borchia and Annalisa Tardino,
members of the EO's transport committee, also said the passenger
was denied adequate service on the ground and "re-protection"
for another ensuing flight.
"If these facts were to be proven it would be very serious,"
said the League MEPS.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone
disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare
neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss
of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles.
It usually leads to death, quite rapidly in the most severe
form, although some sufferers like the late physicist Stephen
Hawking live on for many years with a less severe form.
