Veteran Italian TV journalist Enrico
Mentana on Tuesday chided the husband of Premier Giorgia Meloni,
Mediaset TV journalist Andrea Giambruno, for "talking rubbish"
when he advised women not to get drunk if they wanted to avoid
being raped.
"If you're a woman and you go around after midnight in a
miniskirt or without a bra, if you're still out after midnight,
or if you have one drink too many, then don't be surprised if
they rape you", Mentana characterised Giambruno as saying,
without directly naming him.
"But if you follow this logic, and you're a journalist on TV,
whether you're single or married, when you talk arrant rubbish,
and half the world jumps onto you, you should know who to
blame".
Giambruno, 42, has been the partner of 46-year-old Meloni for
over 10 years and they have a seven-year-old daughter.
His Monday night comments on lowering the risk of rape by not
drinking to oblivion spurred a backlash Tuesday and the
opposition urged Meloni to distance herself from them.
Mentana, formerly a top Rai state broadcaster and Mediaset
Berlusconi news host, currently works at La7.
