Italy has clocked up two more femicides after two women were allegedly killed by their husbands on Tuesday.
A 66-year-old woman of Indian origin was reportedly beaten to death by her husband with a cricket bat in the Emilia Romagna town of Salsomaggiore Terme near Parma and a 42-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband in front of one of their children in Andria in Puglia.
In the first case, the man, also of Indian origin, was apprehended by an off-duty Carabinieri police officer who intervened after hearing the woman's shouts.
In the second, the man reportedly subsequently called the Carabinieri police and confessed.
The new femicides come against a backdrop of ongoing public anger and dismay at the brutal murder of 22-year-old Giulia Cecchettin by her 21-year-old former boyfriend Filippo Turetta on November 11.
The femicide grabbed media headlines and led to a new level of awareness of the need to address the problem of gender-based violence in Italy.
