Death threats against an Italian
antifascist on trial in Budapest for allegedly attacking two
neo-Nazis last year appeared overnight near the Hungarian
embassy in Rome.
The case of Ilaria Salis, 39, has caused tension between Italy
and Hungary after Rome protested against her detention
conditions after she was led into court on a chain with her
hands and ankles cuffed.
Among the phrases spared in black paint on a wall near the
embassy were "Die Ilaria", "Free Comrades" and "You don't put
Fascism on trial".
DIGOS security police are investigating and CCTV footage is
being viewed.
Left-Green Alliance (AVS) Senator Ilara Cucchi said the daubs
showed that "a climate of hate is mounting on the Ilaria Salis
case".
Hungary's foreign minister on Wednesday said Salis is not a
martyr after allegedly being part of a German-led 'Hammer Gang'
that "attacked innocent people in the street" and has said she
should get her deserved punishment, prompting Rome to protest
again while denying claims it had interfered in her case.
