Pope Francis spent a quiet night at the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli Hospital, the Vatican Press Office said on Wednesday morning.
"The Pope spent a quiet night, he woke up and had breakfast", it said.
On Tuesday evening, the Vatican Press Office said the pope had developed pneumonia in both lungs and continued to present a complex picture.
"Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture" the Vatican said in its update.
The 88-year-old Argentine pontiff underwent diagnostic tests, including a CT scan which showed the "onset of bilateral pneumonia, which requires additional drug therapy", the Vatican said.
"The polymicrobial infection, which arose on a picture of bronchiecstasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and which required the use of cortisone antibiotic therapy, makes the therapeutic treatment more complex", said the note.
The pope, who was admitted to the Rome hospital on Friday, was initially diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection, or a mix of microbes.
"Nevertheless, Pope Francis remains in good spirits", the Vatican stressed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Vatican had announced that all public engagements on the pope's calendar had been cancelled through Sunday.
The pontiff was originally scheduled to preside over several events at the weekend for the 2025 Jubilee of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican said on Monday that doctors had changed the pope's therapy for the second time during his hospitalization due to a complex clinical situation.
