An inmate died of burns in hospital
after torching his cell in a Perugia prison Wednesday.
The man, a Tunisian, had a year to go on a five-year sentence
for drug offences, authorities said.
He was named as Sami Bettibi, 54.
Prison officers' union SAPP said "the warders' timely
intervention could not prevent the tragic event".
SAPP and other unions recently raised an alarm about a wave of
suicides in Italian prisons due to overcrowding and poor
conditions.
They said 15 prisoners had taken their own lives so far this
year compared to 13 at the same stage of last year.
