Premier Giorgia Meloni told question time in the Senate that she was a patriot and Italy and the EU must boost defence spending.
Saying that Rome would hike defence spending to 2% of GDP this year in line with NATO demands, she said that the Atlantic Alliance should look more to its southern flank, Meloni said that Italy now had a clear foreign policy and doomsayers who predicted it would be isolated under a centre-right government had been proven wrong.
Meloni stressed the importance of keeping the EU and the US united, and also said she was ready to brief parliament on India-Pakistan tensions.
On Ukraine, she reiterated that Rome was always at Kyiv's side and Moscow should show that it wants peace.
She said that ensuring security was not a favour to the US but "a favour to us."
