President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday paid tribute to Lorenzo Parelli, an 18-year-old high-school student who was crushed to death in 2022 by a steel bar while on a work-experience programme in Udine, on the third anniversary of his passing.
The head of State marked the anniversary in a message to Parelli's home region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, which has created 'Lorenzo's Charter', a document signed by schools, business and public authorities that seeks to promote a culture of workplace health and safety.
"Safety in the workplace is a crucial issue in order to guarantee the real protection of the fundamental rights that the Republic recognises for each person," Mattarella said.
"Lorenzo's Charter is a permanent appeal aimed at ensuring synergy between training organisations and companies to guarantee safe working environments, where the student is placed in a central position.
"The tragic death of Lorenzo Parelli during an internship in Udine dramatically drew Italian society's attention to the processes that accompany young people as they enter the world of work".
