High jump champion Gianmarco 'Gimbo'
Tamberi announced that he will compete at the 2028 Summer
Olympics to be held in Los Angeles on the opening night of the
75th edition of the Sanremo Song Festival on Tuesday evening.
"See you in Los Angeles in 2028", he said at the Ariston Theatre
after reciting a monologue alongside singer and songwriter
Jovanotti.
Tamberi failed to defend his Olympic title at the Paris Games
last summer after being hospitalised with renal colic and
vomiting blood, sparking rumours that he would retire.
And on the opening night of the festival, which runs until
Saturday, Pope Francis said in a video message that "music is
beauty, it is a tool of peace, it is a language that all
populations speak to reach everybody's hearts, which can help
the cohabitation of mankind".
Brunori SAS, Giorgia, Lucio Corsi, Simone Cristicchi and Achille
Lauro were the five artists who topped the standings on the
first evening of the much-loved TV jamboree and song contest.
