2025 is set to set a new record for
prison suicides after 2024's with the current rate being about
two a day, Senator Ilaria Cucchi said after a visit to Modena
Prison Friday.
Cucchi, who became a Green-Left Alliance (AVS) Senator after
campaigning for justice for her younger brother Stefano who was
beaten to death by police in a Rome jail in 2009, said she had
found the "usual" problems of overcrowding and staff shortages
at the Sant'Anna Jail, which has seen four of the 15 prison
suicides this year in Italy.
"What I found in the Modena prison exactly reflects the reality
of all Italian prisons: from overcrowding to the understaffing
of officers. But not only understaffing, there is also a lack of
training and preparation in managing certain situations which,
as is now known, are the order of the day", she said.
