The 'Lupi', the Italian under-23 national team, are in Madrid to take part in the first Orsi Trophy: in this trip, the recently reconstituted selection of promising young Italian under-23 rugby players is called upon to compete against two teams of the same age.
On this occasion, the Italian ambassador in Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, yesterday received, together with his staff, the team accompanied by a delegation from the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR), led by vice-president Antonio Luisi. As we learn from a note, also present on this occasion were the president of the Lazio Regional Committee of the FIR, Maurizio Amedei, the president of the Rugby Club Orsi Italiani Madrid Andrea Chevallard, the veteran of the Lupi's historical formation Bernardino Giovannelli, once a representative of Central and Southern Italy, and the president of the Com.It.Es. of Madrid, Andrea Lazzari.
In addition to the Lupi, the French Lyceum team, the Complutense University team (the Cisneros) and the Madrid Community's regional first division champion, Hermo Soto del Real, will take part in the quadrangular. The semi-finals and final will be played today at the Complutense National Stadium, where the Spanish national rugby team usually takes the field: the Wolves will compete against the French Liceo team, while the Cisneros will face Hermo Soto del Real. Admission to the stadium will be free.
The cup, decorated with ribbons bearing the colours of the flags of Italy, Spain and France, is named after the Italian rugby team from Madrid, which was formed in 2016.
During the reception at the embassy, Ambassador Buccino recalled the values of sport and pointed out how the First Orsi Trophy is a tangible sign of the full integration of Italians into the Spanish socio-economic fabric, recommending rest to the players in what promises to be a demanding sporting challenge.
