The Ambassador of Italy to Spain, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi. attended the 'Foro La Toja - Vínculo Atlántico 2024', at the Illa da Toxa, in Galicia, north-west Spain, which was inaugurated yesterday by King Felipe VI and the president of the Galician Regional Government, Alfonso Rueda, and which will be attended until Saturday 5 October by senior representatives of Spanish institutions and authoritative personalities from the national and international political, academic and economic world.
Founded in 2019, the La Toja Forum is a space for reflection on the values that define liberal democracies and defend pluralism and open societies whose pillars are individual freedom, equality and the dignity of the human being.
The sixth edition of the Forum is dedicated to the phenomenon of social polarisation, which undermines the minimum consensus on the values common to every society on which the health and effectiveness of a democratic system depend, and which therefore makes political systems less efficient and less democratic. The new challenges of the global world, such as anticipating and preventing the impact of artificial intelligence and the decarbonisation of the economy, are also at the heart of the proceedings.
In addition to former Spanish ministers, distinguished international academics and leading figures from the business world, the President-elect of the European Council, António Costa, the former presidents of the Spanish government, Felipe González and Mariano Rajoy, the Minister of the Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, the Governor of the Bank of Spain, José Luis Escrivá, the President of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute and editor of the EU report on the future of the single market, (who spoke with a video), and Edmundo González Urrutia, opposition presidential candidate in the 28 July elections in Venezuela.
During the event, the Foro La Toja - Josep Piqué prize was awarded to the Vice President of the European Commission and outgoing High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell.
