Alessandro Cattaneo took up the post of Italian Ambassador to Ottawa today. This was reported by the Farnesina in a statement.
Born in Casale Monferrato in 1971, Cattaneo graduated in Law at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. Following a competitive examination, he entered the diplomatic career in 1998.
He began his professional career at the Farnesina in the General Directorate for Emigration and Social Affairs and later at the General Secretariat. In 2002, he took up a position at the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv, where he coordinated the office's commercial section. In 2006, he was posted to the Permanent Representation to the Atlantic Council in Brussels.
In 2010 he returned to Rome to take up a post at the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic. In 2013, he is assigned to Washington as an Adviser. In 2017, he returns to the Permanent Representation to the Atlantic Council in Brussels as First Counselor and, subsequently, as Deputy Permanent Representative.
In 2021 he returned to Rome to take up service as Head of Office IV (NATO and Strategic Issues) of the Directorate General for Political and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2023 he serves as Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Council of Ministers. On 5 December 2024, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Canada. In 2013, he was appointed Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
