The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Embassy of Italy in Brasilia, in collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), today held the closing event of the humanitarian project aimed at the protection and socio-economic inclusion of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Brazil. With an investment of €500,000, the initiative has benefited more than 5,000 people in Roraima, giving priority to indigenous communities, children and adolescents.
The event, hosted by the Italian Embassy in Brasilia, brought together representatives of the Italian government, UNHCR and partner organisations to reinforce the importance of international collaboration in responding to the Venezuelan migration crisis. During the 12 months of implementation, the project ensured access to documents, education, health, emergency shelter and financial support to people in vulnerable situations in the cities of Pacaraima and Boa Vista.
Funding from the Italian Cooperation strengthened the humanitarian response of 'Operation Welcome', providing legal protection and guidance, as well as housing for some 4,000 refugees and migrants. Some 650 people in situations of extreme vulnerability received financial aid to strengthen their autonomy. Sports and cultural activities were also promoted, directly impacting 500 children, adolescents and adults, contributing to peaceful coexistence and the fight against xenophobia. The UNHCR representative in Brazil, Davide Torzilli, underlined the impact of the project: 'This initiative has been a beacon of hope for many, providing protection and essential humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations'.
The Italian Ambassador to Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, stressed the importance of international cooperation: "Solidarity is a fundamental value for Italy, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that guarantee dignity and opportunities to refugees and migrants in vulnerable situations".
AICS Director Mario Beccia underlined: "Italy's commitment to humanitarian response remains constant, ensuring that those most in need receive the support they need to rebuild their lives".
UNHCR reiterates the need for shared responsibility between governments, the private sector and civil society to strengthen the response to forced displacement. Humanitarian assistance not only ensures survival, but also promotes the socio-economic integration of refugees, in line with the UN 2030 Agenda, so that no one is left behind."
