As part of the celebration of the 'International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025', established in 2015 by the UN General Assembly and now in its tenth edition, the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Spain, presents the event: 'SCIENCE = SUBSTANTIVE, SINGLE, FEMININE', tomorrow at 6.30pm.
During the event, four brilliant Italian female researchers working in Spain will illustrate their paths and successes.
The lack of female vocations in the study of STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a cultural problem common to Italy and Spain, which risks compromising their capacity for innovation and highlights the need to boost female participation.
To foster vocations, it is essential to present young people with exemplary paths and tangible reference points. To this end, Laura Formentini (biochemist, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Alessandra Gorla (computer scientist, IMDEA Software, Madrid) and Licia Verde (cosmologist, ICREA, Barcelona, winner of the Medalla de la Real Sociedad Española de Física - Fundación BBVA 2024) will talk with the Embassy's scientific attaché Sergio Scopetta.
Part of the event will be dedicated to celebrating the career of Paola Bovolenta (Director of the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, Madrid), who will be decorated on the occasion by the Ambassador of Italy in Spain, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, with the Order of the Star of Italy.
