On the occasion of the 'Day of the Sea', the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participates in awareness-raising and dissemination initiatives on the theme of the sea: an important priority of Maeci's action.
Within the framework of its 2024 G7 Presidency, Italy has ensured particular attention to the security of critical underwater infrastructures.
The environmental dimension of the sea is the subject of particular attention, first and foremost in the framework of the multilateral negotiations in which the Maeci participates. It also supports the Italian position on the law of the sea at a European and international level and plays a leading role, through its Representation to the International Maritime Organisation, in promoting the interests of Italy and Italian operators in the maritime transport sector, ensuring the necessary consular services in maritime navigation.
The sea is the subject of initiatives disseminated abroad by the network of Embassies, Consulates and Italian Cultural Institutes. One example is the photographic exhibition 'We are Sea. We are Sea', which accompanied the world tour of the 'Amerigo Vespucci' school ship.
Dedicated to children is the special volume 'Geronimo Stilton. A Thousand Wonders in Blue' produced by Maeci. Finally, together with the Italian and European Space Agencies and Telespazio/e-Geos, the 'Mediterranea' exhibition project was realised.
On the subject of the blue economy, Italy continued to support the WestMed initiative, promoted by the European Union and aimed at the development of a sustainable blue economy in 10 countries in the Western Mediterranean area.
Through its development cooperation activities, then, Italy actively contributes to the protection of marine ecosystems and the promotion of a sustainable blue economy, in line with the 2030 Agenda Goals. Indeed, Maeci supports various development cooperation initiatives to promote the sustainable management of natural resources, the protection of marine heritage and the creation of inclusive economic opportunities.
At the national level, Maeci contributes, within the Interministerial Committee for Sea Policies, to the implementation of the 'Plan for the Sea', adopted by the Government in 2023.
