"Intelligens: Towards a New Architecture of Adaptation" is the new Manifesto for the Future of Architecture, presented in Madrid by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Carlo Ratti in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi.
Southern Europe, including Spain, has been hit hard by the effects of climate change, with rising temperatures, prolonged droughts and catastrophic flooding. A recent example are the dramatic floods that hit Valencia in October 2024. In this context, the manifesto argues that architecture must assume a more urgent and proactive role: not limiting itself to mitigation (i.e. contributing to the reduction of emissions), but placing equal emphasis on adaptation, i.e. the ability of the built environment to resist and respond to the impacts of climate change. The theme is at the heart of the Architecture Biennale 2025, (10 May - 23 November); with an edition that also serves as a call to action. In addition to emerging strongly through the 19th. International Architecture Exhibition, this call to commitment was carried forward by Carlo Ratti in his dialogue with the representatives of the 66 National Participations from all over the world, who were invited to respond to the proposal 'One Place, One Solution' and present concrete architectural ideas for adaptation to climate change.
"Architecture," said Ratti, "is no longer just about form, it is about survival. To meet this challenge it must itself adapt, drawing on every form of intelligence at our disposal: natural, artificial and collective. We will explore all of this in the International Architecture Exhibition with more than 750 participants: architects and engineers, mathematicians and climatologists, philosophers and artists, chefs and programmers, writers and wood carvers, farmers and fashion designers and many more'. Following President Sánchez's signature, the Manifesto now enters a phase of open circulation. Numerous participants of the Architecture Biennale 2025 have already joined the appeal, which is now extended to architects, researchers, students and citizens from all over the world.
