A second judicial case regarding
Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove has resumed
in Biella near Turin after an order to shelve the case was
overturned.
Delmastro was indicted earlier this week for allegedly leaking
classified information over the case of a visit by centre-left
MPs to jailed anarchist leader Alfredo Cospito.
The probe that has resumed in the Piedmont city regards the
alleged defamation of a magistrate.
The contested episode dates back to 2021, when Delmastro delle
Vedove circulated a video in which he called Quintino Lorelli,
the Attorney General of the Piedmont Court of Auditors, "the
Captain Fracassa of the Italian judicial left" after the opening
of a file on alleged financial damage involving a Piedmontese
member of Delmastro's and Premier Giorgia Meloni's rightwing
Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
Captain Fracassa is the Italian name for Captain Fracasse, an
1863 novel by the French writer Théophile Gautier, featuring a
fictional bumbling army officer who has since become a byword
for comical ineptitude.
