A former cellmate of Ilaria Salis, the
antifascist militant on trial in Hungary for allegedly attacking
two neoNazis at their annual rally there last February, told La7
TV Saturday night of "inhuman" prison conditions including bed
bugs and mice, "uneatable" food and punishments including being
showered with icy water and being put into a cage in the cell,
only able to stare at the ceiling all day.
The woman, Carmen Giorgio, spoke of "a situation that has
nothing to do with the European Union".
Giorgio, who was detained after being arrested for having
persons with non-European passports in her car, shard a cell
with Salis and another sis women for several months.
Hungary has repeatedly been reprimanded by the EU for rule of
law infringements and human rights issues.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has promised his friend and Italian
Premier Giorgia Meloni that 39-year-old Salis, whom Italy plans
to get moved back home under house arrest once convicted, will
get a fair trial and her conditions are fit for purpose.
