on the January 16 arrest of Mafia super-fugitive Matteo Messina
Denaro is among the winners of this year's second Mario
Sarzanini Prize, named after a top crime beat reporter who died
two years ago.
Lara Sirignano beat everyone to the punch on the morning of
January 16 in reporting that the 60-year-old Cosa Nostra boss
had been picked up at a Palermo cancer clinic.
Other winners of this year's prize include comic Rosario
Fiorello for his satirical take on the news in a daily press
round-up on Rai state broadcaster, and Ukraine reporter
Francesca Mannocchi, who works for several Italian and
international outlets including the Guardian.
The other prize winners are deputy editor of the Post news
agency Francesco Costa, Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset newsman
Alessio Fusco, RDS radio presenter Gianluca Teodori, and
Alessandro Iapino, press officer for the Rome-based Bambino Gesù
children's hospital.
The awards will be given out on March 20.
