The number of students with
disabilities has risen in Italy's schools with nearly 356,000
such pupils enrolled in the 2023-2024 academic year, or 4.5% of
the total, up 6% on the previous year, Istat said on Tuesday.
Overall, an additional 75,000 students with a disability were
enrolled in Italian schools over the past five years, up 26%,
according to the national statistics bureau.
Istat also reported a rising number of teachers supporting
students with special needs, up from 63% to 73% in four years.
However, many teachers still lack specific training - 27% across
Italy, 38% in the North - while 11% are assigned to classes late
during the academic year, the agency said.
Moreover, on average one out of two students with a disability -
57% - had changed support teacher from one year to another, said
Istat.
