Pope Francis was brave in denouncing
the war in Gaza amid "so much cowardice", two-time ex premier
and populist leftist 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte
told Wednesday's commemoration of the late Argentine pontiff in
the House.
"On Gaza, on the current condition of the Palestinians, he had
courageous words that were not wholly to be expected in the
midst of so much cowardice," he told a joint session of
parliament at Montecitorio.
"Until last Saturday, he continued to call the parish priest of
the only church in the Gaza Strip to inquire about the health
conditions of Palestinian children forgotten by many but not by
him who also knew their names".
"He always and tenaciously took a stand against every war,
against the lords of arms, in favor of all the victims of
conflicts.
"War is always a defeat, he warned us. And again, let us not
give in to the logic of weapons and rearmament, peace is never
built with weapons but by holding hands, opening hearts", said
the former premier, who recently led a rally against European
rearmament.
