Silvio Berlusconi was said to be in a
complex but stable condition on Thursday morning in the
intensive care unit of Milan's San Raffele hospital, where he
has been receiving treatment for cardiovascular problems and to
restore his blood oxygen levels since Wednesday.
Sources close to the four-times former premier and media mogul
said he had spent a quiet night and was alert.
The serious oxygenation issues that have reportedly put
Berlusconi's cardiovascular system and lungs under stress could
also be linked to problems with his spinal cord, the sources
added.
"I spoke with Professor Zangrillo (Berlusconi's personal
physician and head of anesthesia and intensive care at the San
Raffaele hospital) this morning, and he told me that Silvio
Berlusconi had a quiet night, his condition is stable," Deputy
Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the media
billionaire's No.2 in his centre right Forza Italia (FI) party,
said during public service broadcaster Rai's Uno Mattina
programme on Thursday.
"Berlusconi was working until two evenings ago. We hope the lion
will soon return to the leadership of the party, he never gives
up. He is the leader of our party, he is the leader of Forza
Italia," continued Tajani, adding "We all want to be
optimistic".
