The Carabinieri of the ROS special
unit coordinated by DDA anti-mafia investigators on Monday
arrested 25 people suspected of involvement in an alleged scheme
promoted by the local Mallardo criminal clan to influence the
municipal administration of Giugliano, a populous town north of
Naples.
The criminal organization, a member of the so-called Alliance of
Secondigliano, a strategic network of local Camorra crime
syndicate clans, also allegedly intervened to solve conflicts
between private citizens, according to Naples anti-mafia
investigators.
Overall, Carabinieri police notified 20 arrest warrants on
detained suspects and placed five others under house arrest.
The clan in particular is suspected of having influenced the
electoral campaign ahead of municipal elections held in
Giugliano, Campania, in September 2020.
The suspects have been charged with mafia-style criminal
association, political-mafia electoral exchange in relation to
the 2020 municipal elections, extortion, attempted extortion,
usury, fraudulent transfer of assets and corruption.
The preliminary investigations judge (GIP) in Naples who issued
the arrest warrants, at the request of Naples prosecutors, also
ordered the seizure of real estate properties, companies and
financial assets worth millions of euros, investigative sources
revealed.
Revenues from illicit activities were used by the Mallardo clan
to support members, including detainees, and their families, the
sources said.
