Italian director Matteo Garrone
and the cast of his fantasy drama The Tale of Tales garnered
applause from press conference participants at the Cannes film
festival Thursday.
"It's a female-centered film written by four men," Garrone
said.
"The actresses were decisive in endowing it with truth".
Starring Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, and John C. Reilly,
The Tale of Tales is a film in three episodes drawn from a
collection of 50 Neapolitan baroque fairy tales penned by
Giambattista Basile and published posthumously between 1634 and
1636.
Juggling leitmotifs such as birth, death, the cult of the
body and desire, Garrone says the film draws inspiration from
Game of Thrones, Tarantino favourite Mario Bava, and Goya's
grotesque 'caprice' paintings.
Garrone co-wrote and co-produced as well as directed what
is his first English-language film.
