The Embassy of Italy in Dakar renews with a note its commitment to supporting the training and development of the scientific skills of young women and girls in West Africa, valuing their talent and passion. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the UN General Assembly in 2015, aims to ensure the full and equal access of women and girls to the scientific world, recognising their essential role and valuable contribution to the advancement of technology and knowledge.
Thanks to programmes of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and collaboration with Italian universities and research institutes, the embassy offers female students, researchers and lecturers training and research opportunities in Italy.
Successful examples include the following: Aminata Mboup, from Senegal, is attending the master's degree course in sustainable design at the Federico II University in Naples; Catherine Mendy, from Gambia, is studying communication at the University of Padua; Maty Ndiaye, a researcher at the Physics Department of the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (Ucad), did a period of research on materials science at the Institute of Science and Technology for Energy and Sustainable Mobility at the CNR; Fatima Ndiaye, a microbiologist and researcher at the Elhadj Ibrahima Niass University (Ussein) in Senegal, completed a research stay at the institute for Sustainable Plant Protection of the CNR; Seynabou Cissè, from the Geology department of the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (Ucad), conducted research in hydrogeology with lecturers from the University of Pisa and researchers from the CNR's Institute of Geo-resources and Geosciences.
These experiences,' continues the note from the Italian Embassy in Dakar, 'demonstrate the embassy's concrete commitment to creating opportunities that enhance women's potential in the scientific sector and help bridge the gender gap in research and innovation in West Africa. These initiatives also help to publicise and promote the Italian higher education, research and innovation system, which is open to experiences designed to enrich the academic career of the participants, encouraging innovation and overcoming major global challenges, the note concludes.
