A baby girl was left at the San Giovanni Battista church in the Poggiofranco district of Bari early on Saturday.
The baby, who was born about 10 days ago, was left in an incubator deliberately set up so that parents can leave children that they are unable to take care of.
She is in good health, but has been taken to Bari's Policlinico di Bari for checks, sources said.
The parish priest, Don Antonio Ruccia, was alerted to the presence of the child by a sensor that sent a message to his mobile phone "When the Carabinieri police asked me what I wanted to call her, I said Maria Grazia, after the Virgin Mary, who I hope will accompany this little girl throughout her life," said Ruccia.
