President Sergio Mattarella was in
Perugia on Wednesday to take part in the ceremony opening the
100th academic year of the Umbrian city's University for
Foreigners.
The head of State was greeted by Umbria Governor Stefania
Proietti, Perugia Mayor Vittoria Ferdinandi, Prefect Armando
Gradone, the University's Dean Valerio De Cesaris and children
from local schools waving Italian flags.
Before the ceremony Mattarella had meetings with student and
staff representatives.
The university has organized a rich programme of cultural
initiatives to celebrate its 100th anniversary in the coming
months.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the head of State said the
university for foreigners in Perugia expresses "many diversities
which have a common value that keeps them together: that Italy
is a welcoming, open Country".
"This is what I would like to underline", he noted.
Mattarella stressed that such tasks have "great relevance that
deserve the Republic's gratitude".
