Federica Brignone said after notching
her 33rd World Cup win in the giant slalom at Sestriere and
narrowing the gap with Alberto Tomba to 17 that she had told
herself "whatever you do, go for it, and I attacked".
"It was a tough day. I did everything I could to rest and
recover 100%: I don't think I've ever been forced to stay home
for six days without doing anything (she had the flu, ed.). It
was complicated, I felt like I would never get better and I
thank those who followed me these days. But I was aware that I
was skiing well and I knew that by concentrating my energy on
the two runs I could get a good result", Brignone said after her
sixth victory of this season in the World Cup.
"I'm really happy, it was a special race: I basically didn't
warm up - she continued - and before the first heat I felt like
I had no energy. After the descent it seemed less bad than I
expected; maybe getting going after six days out helped me. I
struggled a bit to get into the rhythm in the upper part of the
first heat, then in the second I wanted to attack at full speed:
'whatever, whatever's going on', I said to myself.
In addition, today is also my dad Daniele's birthday, now I'll
try to wish him a happy birthday". Today's success in Sestriere
allowed Brignone to consolidate first place in the general
classification, considering Lara Gut's exit.
"I want to take it race by race: I was worried about her illness
but I wanted to be there - said Federica -, after the World
Championships I felt I had to do a good race in front of the
Italian crowd. Tomba is within 17 podiums? Oh well, bye... I'll
never catch him. I've already told Alberto".
