Daniela Fumarola was elected new
general secretary of the CSIL trade union, Italy's
second-biggest, on Wednesday replacing Luigi Sbarra who has
stepped down having reached the 65-year age limit for holding
that office.
Taranto-born Fumarola, 59, has climbed the CISL ranks over the
last three decades since getting a psychology degree at Milan's
Cattolica University.
CISL, once linked to the now defunct and long dominant Christian
Democrat Party, are Italy's second biggest trade union
federation behind the leftwing CIGL, once linked to the Italian
Communist Party (PCI) and now to its heir the centre-left
Democratic Party.
The other member of the Big Three is UIL, once linked to the
Socialist Party (PSI).
There is another union, UGL, linked to rightwing parties.
