A 24-year-old Romanian burglar shot in
the head by a security guard as he and three other members of a
gang were allegedly trying to rob an apartment in northern Rome
Thursday night has died of critical injuries in a Roman
hospital, medical sources said Friday.
The guard had been placed under investigation for attempted
murder, which is now expected to be upgraded to manslaughter via
excessive use of a firearm, legal sources said.
The alleged gang had climbed over a balcony and broken into the
first-floor flat of a woman who lived alone on the Via Cassia,
allegedly seeking money, jewels and other valuables, when the
guard saw them and fired several shots, police said.
