The European Commission said
Wednesday that it has launched an infringement procedure against
Italy over the high number of teachers employed on temporary
contracts in Italian State schools.
"Under Italian law, fixed-term schoolteachers are not entitled
to gradual salary progression based on previous periods of
service, contrary to permanent teachers," the EU executive said.
"The Commission considers these discriminatory employment
conditions violate the principle of non-discrimination of
fixed-term workers and infringe EU law.
"The Commission is therefore sending a letter of formal notice
to Italy, which now has two months to respond and address the
shortcomings raised by the Commission.
"In the absence of a satisfactory response, the Commission may
decide to issue a reasoned opinion".
