A 40-year-old Moroccan citizen has
been arrested by Carabinieri police on attempted murder charges
for allegedly attacking his 38-year-old ex with a hammer,
investigative sources said on Wednesday.
The man has been detained on aggravated attempted murder
charges, the sources explained.
The victim, who is also Moroccan but has been residing in the
area of Mantua for a long time with her two children, aged 11
and 9, is in a critical condition after her ex-partner allegedly
hit her with the hammer 10 times on the head.
She underwent emergency surgery but is still in a
life-threatening condition, medical sources said.
The victim was attacked on Monday although the incident was made
public only Wednesday.
She was rescued by a delivery man who called an ambulance after
she called for help from her home in the town of Roncoferrato
near Mantua.
Before undergoing a complex neurological procedure, she told
Carabinieri police in hospital that she had been attacked by her
ex-partner.
According to investigative sources, a number of witnesses have
seen the man leaving his former partner's home after the attack.
The man, who has a criminal record for abuse and violence, had
been recently reported to the authorities by the woman for
stalking after he had tried to break into her home.
She had installed a video surveillance camera outside her
apartment, which her ex tried to destroy, investigative sources
said.
Traces of blood were also found in the man's home after it was
searched by investigators, per the sources.
The case is the latest in an alarming spate of attacks against
women in Italy.
