A wave of storms caused havoc in many
parts of central Italy on Thursday, with Tuscany hit especially
hard by rain bombs.
Two boats were overturned in the harbour of the Tuscan town of
Talamone and there were mudslides on the Island of Giglio.
"It could have been much worse," said Giglio Mayor Armando
Schiaffino.
"There were some roads blocked by landslides and, for a few
hours, Giglio Campese was cut off because a centuries-old pine
tree fell on the road.
Workers are restoring the road system".
On the Island of Elba, provincial highway 33 was closed to
traffic due to a landslide.
There was also disruption in Lazio, with roads flooded in the
province of Rome and power cuts in parts of the town of
Fiumicino.
Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas
emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves,
droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and
more intense.
Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are
causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil
fuels such as oil, gas and coal, sales of which generate huge
profits for the world's energy giants.
