On the occasion of Design Day, the Centre de design de l'Université UQAM in collaboration with the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal are proposing, from today until 6 April, the exhibition 'Buone Nuove - Women in Architecture'.
The exhibition explores how women and collectives led by Italian, Canadian and international women architects have raised the quality of modern and contemporary design, offering models of inspiration for new generations.
The exhibition consists of several sections: the section Histories of Italian Women Architects curated by Pippo Ciorra, Elena Motisi and Elena Tinacci of the MAXXI Museum in Rome, which presents the work of 21 women who have transformed architecture, from 20th century pioneers such as Lina Bo Bardi and Gae Aulenti to the new generations.
The Practices in Italy section focuses on the important contributions of six international female architects who have realised significant projects in Italy in the first two decades of the 21st century, from Zaha Hadid et Liz Diller, à Kazuyo Sejima; a section devoted to a selection of projects by female architects from Québec who stand out for the excellence of their work, curated by Louise Pelletier of UQAM University; a section on the work of a selection of Canadian female architects who have worked outside Québec. A section curated by Federica Sala dedicated to the design creations of the "pioneers", architects who worked after the Second World War such as Gae Aulenti, Nanda Vigo, Anna Ferrieri Castelli, Franca Helg and Cini Boeri.
The exhibition also includes a timeline tracing the most significant achievements of women in architecture over the last 100 years, with a focus on local and global socio-political contexts. The public is invited to participate by sending images and texts that will be presented as exhibition postcards, giving voice to those who support women in architecture.
