Appeasement failed in 1938 when
firmness might have averted the Second World War and which
policy might be useful today, President Sergio Mattarella asked
in an address at Marseille University Wednesday, drawing a
parallel between the inter-war years and the current global
situation.
"The appeasement strategy did not work in 1938. Firmness would
have, with high probability, avoided war. Bearing in mind the
current conflicts, can it work today?.
"An abandonment of responsibilities led those countries to
sacrifice the principles of justice and legitimacy, in the aim
of avoiding conflict, in the name of any solution and a
stability that, inevitably, would have been lacking", he
explained.
