Opposition 5-Star Movement (M5S)
leader and ex premier Giuseppe Conte on Wednesday accused
Premier Giorgia Meloni of "running away" and demonstrating
"institutional cowardice" in failing to speak to the controversy
surrounding the release and return to Libya of wanted war
criminal Osama Almasri, instead sending two ministers to brief
parliament in her stead.
"Today there is the great absence of President Meloni, who runs
away from Parliament and citizens, an act of institutional
cowardice," said Conte, who along with the rest of the
opposition says that Meloni took the decision to put the alleged
murderer and rapist on a secret service plane back to a hero's
welcome in Tripoli.
"I know that you are watching us behind some computer, Premier
Meloni, and therefore I am addressing you. You did not come here
to talk about Almasri, do not allow yourself to speak in front
of some bedside rug!".
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio and Interior Minister Matteo
Piantedosi told the House Wedneday that there had been crucial
errors in the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for
Almasri and that Rome had not been blackmailed by Libya to send
him back to resume work on stopping migrants leaving for Italy.
