President Sergio Mattarella said in an
address at Marseille University Wednesday that neo-feudatories
of the third millennium were the new corsairs, in an apparent
reference to tech oligarchs.
"Alongside a new multipolar articulation of the world balance,
the concept of spheres of influence reappears, forcefully and in
contradiction with it, at the origin of the evils of the
twentieth century and that my generation fought," he told
students and academic staff.
"A theme that is accompanied by that of figures of
neo-feudatories of the third millennium - new corsairs to whom
patents should be attributed - who aspire to be entrusted with
lordships in the public dimension, to manage parts of the common
goods represented by cyberspace as well as by extra-atmospheric
space, almost usurpers of democratic sovereignty".
