Italy's centre-left opposition
parties on Tuesday filed a no-confidence motion against Justice
Minisyer Carlo Nordio over his handling of the arrest, release
and return to Libya of an alleged war criminal wanted by the
International Criminal Court (ICC), Libyan judicial police chief
General Osama Almasri.
Nordio has said Almasri, wanted for torture, murder and the
alleged rape of migrants as young as five at the notorious
Mitiga jail outside of Tripoli, was released because of errors
in the ICC warrant.
The opposition has said the general was released for reasons of
national interest due to his place in an Italian-funded scheme,
dating back to 2017, to allegedly push back migrants to the
allegedly brutal holding centres in the north African country.
"With regard to the very serious matter of the liberation and
repatriation on a state flight of the Libyan torturer Almasri,
the opposition parties - Democratic Party (PD), 5-Star Movement
(M5S), Green-Left Alliance (AVS), Italia Viva and Più Europa -
will present a motion of no confidence in Parliament against the
Minister of Justice of the Meloni government, Carlo Nordio", the
parties said in a note.
The only opposition party not party to the move was Azione.
