Six Italian newspaper editors on
Monday appealed to Russia's new ambassador to Italy to free a
Wall Street Journal reporter who has become the first US
journalist arrested by Moscow since the Cold war.
The editors wrote to Alexei Paramonov asking him to do what he
could to help get Evan Gershkovich released, voicing their "deep
concern and bewilderment" and "firm condemnation" for what has
been widely reported as a trumped-up arrest for spying.
The editors, who said they were following US and European
colleagues, are: Luciano Fontana (Corriere della Sera), Claudio
Cerasa (Il Foglio), Massimo Giannini (La Stampa), Massimo
Martinelli (Il Messaggero), Maurizio Molinari (La Repubblca),
and Agnese Pini (Qn Quotidiano nazionale, Il Giorno, La Nazione
and il Resto del Carlino).
