The International Criminal Court (ICC)
should be investigated for allegedly sending an incorrect
warrant for Libyan alleged war criminal Osama Almasri, rather
than the Hague court probing the Italian government for its
handling of the case, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said
Thursday.
Tajani, who is also deputy premier, said he "agreed 100%" with
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio who on Wednesday said the ICC had
made a "hash" of the case with "mistakes" such as the allegedly
wrong year when Almasri is accused of starting to allegedly
murder and rape migrants as young as five at Tripoli's Mitiga
detention centre.
Tajani was speaking after the ICC said it was pursuing a
Sudanese migrant's complaint against Rome for freeing Almasri
after he was arrested by security police on the ICC warrant.
The centre right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) leader has
previously said that the ICC "is not the Word of God" and that
it had sent Nordio 40 pages in English which made it impossible
for the justice minister to intervene in time and block
Almasri's release.
Asked about the ICC's investigation into the Italian
government's actions, Tajani replied: "No comment on the ICC
(but) I have many reservations about the Court's behavior on
this matter.
"Perhaps an investigation should be opened on the Criminal
Court, we need to have clarifications on how it behaved.
"In any case, I confirm, the document sent to Italy was null, I
agree 100% with what Minister Nordio said".
